Why you think you're right even if you're wrong by Julia Galef |
We as humans are raised with pride and prejudice against. We have a pride in everything we believe in from religion to politics and prejudice against certain people or activities. This pride we all share makes us defensive and if anybody opposes our views we will do anything and everything within our power to prove them wrong. The thing that determines this prejudice is where we are raised and who raised us, and this can determine who we see as friends and enemies. In the story 12 Angry Men Juror No3 and some of the others have a prejudice against people raised in the slums they believe they are nothing but troubled and that since they were raised that way they are killers. They try to convict a boy who was raised in the slums based purely on their prejudice. No3 argued with No8, trying to tell No8 that he was right about the boy and No3 took pride in his belief of the boy and argued based on loose evidence against the boy. No8 fought for the boy based on the search for the truth no matter what he or others believed he fought for the boy, for justice, for the American dream.
